Immigration Reform News 2014: Obama Vows to Take Executive Action Before 2015
President Barack Obama on Wednesday pledged to take actions in an effort to fix the immigration system by the end of the year, according to Associated Press.
Barack Obama will use his executive powers to take action in allowing spouses of approved non-immigrants to work while in the U.S, providing undocumented immigrants with a legal way to earn citizenship, strengthen borders, relieving the multi-year queues for permanent residency and preventing artificial interruptions in work authorization.
"I have no doubt that there will be some Republicans who are angered or frustrated by any executive action that I may take," Obama said in a post-election news conference.
However, a half-dozen GOP senators, including Ted Cruz of Texas, wrote to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev, on Wednesday urging him to quickly pass legislation to block Obama from taking executive action. Otherwise, the senators warned, they will use "all procedural means necessary" to resolve what they called a constitutional crisis of Obama's making, AP reported.
During an interview with CBS, Obama said he had watched while the U.S. Senate produced a bipartisan immigration reform bill, only to have it not taken up by House Republican Speaker John Boehner. Also, he had told Boehner if he could not get it done by year's end, the White House was going to have to take steps to improve the system, Reuters reported.
White House officials say President Obama, who is traveling to Asia and Australia next week, will not take any action until late November at the earliest, but could also wait until December.
