Hulu News & Update: Joseph Fiennes and Elisabeth Moss Co-Star In Hulu's Adaptation Of 'The Handmaid's Tale'
Joseph Fiennes and Elisabeth Moss will co-star in Hulu's 10-episode adaptation of Margaret Atwood's seminal dystopian novel "The Handmaid's Tale."
Hulu announced today that the upcoming series will see Joseph Fiennes' portrayal of Commander Fred Waterford, a malevolent foil to the novel's heroine, Offred, which will be played by Elisabeth Moss. "Orange is the New Black's" Samira Wiley has also signed up to play Offred's friend and fellow handmaiden, Moira.
"The Handmaid's Tale" is set in a future society in North America. In the story, a theocratic Christian group has taken over the society and forms a dictatorship known as the Republic of Gilead, where the United States formerly existed. This government systematically strips away the rights of women as it seeks to bring back the society to an Old Testament-based social order, where women are entirely dominated by men, and women serve as domestic workers, prostitutes and house wives, which is the highest status available.
The protagonist in the story is Offred, who is separated from her husband and placed as a handmaid, alongside a high-ranking member of the Gilead leadership, the Commander. The class where she belongs is composed of women offered to men whose wives are unable to bear children. Since the Commander's wife is still present in the household, Offred is compelled to serve as a sexual surrogate for her so the Commander can have heirs.
