Houston Rockets NBA 2015 News: Howard Comes Back, But Beverley's Out for the Season?

During Monday night's win against the Indiana Pacers, Houston Rockets' starting point guard Patrick Beverley suffered what was initially thought to be a wrist sprain. After the feisty guard flew back to Houston to have the wrist evaluated, Sam Amick of USA Today reports that Beverley has a torn ligament in his left wrist.

During Wednesday's shootaround before a game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Rockets coach Kevin McHale told reporters that the defensive pit bull will seek input from specialists before a decision is made about a potential season-ending surgery, as reported by ESPN.

"If the news on bad on Pat, he might be out a while. We will find out the news on Pat, but the initial thought was that it might be bad. Hopefully, it will good news," McHale said.

Beverley is expected to undergo surgery in a week to 10 days, but sources told ESPN's Marc Stein that the Rockets are still hoping for a more favorable prognosis when the point guard is reevaluated.

According to the ESPN report, Beverley still has to wait for the swelling to subside before a possible course of action can be determined.

The news comes on the day the Rockets got Dwight Howard back from a right knee injury that has kept the former three-time Defensive Player of the Year on the shelf since Jan. 23. In his first game back, Howard played less than 17 minutes, making two of his three shots for four points, along with seven rebounds.

Beverley, for his part, is averaging 10.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game this season for the Rockets, but those numbers don't indicate where the Rockets will miss him, as he anchors the perimeter defense of a team that ranks fourth in the NBA in points allowed per 100 possessions.
