‘Horrible Bosses 2’ Box Office Results, Review: Lackluster Opening on Thanksgiving Weekend with $22.8 Million

With the weekend figures officially in, the year to date domestic box office revealed that New Line's comedy sequel, 'Horrible Bosses 2', earned a disappointing $22.8 million over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend,Deadline reported.

The weekend actuals revealed that the R-rated film was about $10 million below the projections and was a far cry from the 3-day opening sales of the original film in June 2011, which earned almost $210 million in ticket sales worldwide, according to the Deadline.

According to the Wrap, the disappointing figures of the sequel can be accounted to the fact that "sexual comedy films" don't really do well during the Thanksgiving holiday season, even with an all-star cast, like Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jamie Foxx, and Jason Sudeikis.

Warner Brothers distribution chief Dan Fellman said releasing a movie during Thanksgiving was "a bit of a gamble." Although he added that "there was never a problem at Christmas," pointing out that 'The Wolf of Wall Street' and 'Django Unchained' were both R-rated films and were both released during the Christmas holidays, but still did well in the box office, according to the Wrap.

Fellman added that the film might have been slightly affected by the fact that Thanksgiving was a family holiday, but he added that the figures were "always going to be counter-programming, and it will be in the weeks ahead."

'HB2' is currently in fifth place in the weekend's box office, with 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay' taking the first spot with $82.6 million for a 5-day haul, followed by 'Penguins of Madagascar' with $35.4 million, 'Big Hero 6' raking in $25.02 million and 'Interstellar' earning US$21.96 million, according to the Deadline.

On a side note, Bloomberg reported that the film can serve as a way to measure the waning popularity of the New York Jets.

The ticket to see a Jets game is even less than what is paid to see a movie, but despite the price difference, fans were more inclined to watch a movie, such as 'Horrible Bosses 2' for a price of $12.62, compared to watching a Jets game, with a ticket price of $10.
