HoloLens News & Update: Simulator Let Players To Wax Nostalgic In Full 3D
Those who have HoloLens will really get a kick out of this news from Indie developer Andrew Peterson who managed to make an emulator that allows them to play games like "Donkey Kong" and "Super Mario Bros." from 8-bit to 3D.
For now, the Nintendo Entertainment System simulator, aptly called N3S, is still being tweaked and there's no official release date yet. For instance, consistency is not there yet and sound emulations are not as smooth.
Without getting too technical, Peterson used HoloLens mixed-reality tech and mated it with the Libretro core by Nestopia Undead Edition in order to create a 3D-like environment.
The independent developer also explained that most games on HoloLens won't really run at full speed.
"I've also had to hand-tune and optimize the app for HoloLens in a way that won't work with many games to get a consistent enough FPS. But ... it is really cool," he said.
However, playing 8-bit games in 3D might seem very interesting but only if you have the money to do so. Because the bad news is the HoloLens kit will set you back $3,000. Clearly, the demographic for the device is not your ordinary households. For businesses-real estate, engineering, graphic design or special effects, for example-it's going to be very valuable.
But news reports are pointing to a consumer version of the device, which should be much cheaper compared to the current gen. On the other hand, Microsoft has not given a hint as to the release date of that headset.
