Atlanta Hawks NBA 2015 News: Hawks Forward Mike Scott Could Face of to 25 Years on Drug Charges
Following his arrest last month, Atlanta Hawks forward Mike Scott is now facing up to 25 years in prison on two felony drug charges, AJC.com reports.
As noted by the report, Scott was arrested, along with his younger brother on July 30 following a traffic stop along Interstate 85 in Homer. After the stop, police found 35.2 grams of marijuana and 10.9 kilos of Schedule I drug MDMA, better known as "Molly." The marijuana charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years, while the MDMA one carries a sentence of up to 15 years, according to the state of Georgia's statutes.
The AJC.com report states that after being arrested, Scott allegedly told police that all the drugs in the vehicle belonged to him. The 27-year-old posted a bond amounting to $8,100 and was released following a videotaped interview after his Miranda warning.
The Hawks have since released a statement acknowledging the arrest, and saying that they cannot comment on the situation at the moment out of respect for the legal process. As pointed out by the AJC.com report, the league as well as the team does not have to wait for the conclusion of the legal process before handing down disciplinary measures on Scott.
The report also notes that an initial court date in the case could take several months to be placed on the calendar as the drugs found in Scott's vehicle have been sent to an independent lab for processing, according to the Banks County assistant district attorney.
CBSSports.com reported that Scott and his brother fled during the traffic stop and reached speeds of up to 98 mph before stopping two miles down the road. A separate CBSSPorts.com report notes that Scott is currently signed through the 2016-17 season, with his contract for that last year being non-guaranteed.
He was a key reserve for the Eastern Conference finalist, averaging 7.8 points and 2.9 rebounds in 68 regular season games for the Hawks.
