'Harry Potter' News: J.K. Rowling Announces Production of New Play Based on Series

Fans should be elated to hear that author J.K. Rowling has announced the production of a 'Harry Potter' play based on her massively popular book series.

The title of the play will be 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' and will take place in The Palace Theater in London next year.

Rowling has been very scarce on the details, however she has confirmed that this won't be based on any of the stories she's already told, and it also won't be a prequel. Here's what she had to say about the project via Twitter:

"Today is a very special day for two reasons, firstly, 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' was published in the UK 18 years ago! I'm also very excited to confirm today that a new play called 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' will be opening in London next year. It will tell a new story, which is the result of a collaboration between writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany and myself. I don't want to say too much more, because I don't want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans. However, I can say that it is not a prequel! To answer one inevitable (and reasonable!) question - 'Why isn't 'Cursed Child' a new novel?' - I am confident that when audiences see the play they will agree that it was the only proper medium for the story. I've had countless offers to extend Harry's story over the years, but Jack, John and Sonia Friedman are a dream team! It has been a huge pleasure to share with them (and soon, with you!) this untold part of Harry's story"

The Daily Mail seemed to have a few more details on the project:

"The Cursed Child delves into what happened to Harry's parents - Lily Evans Potter and James Potter - before they were killed by Lord Voldemort, forcing an infant Harry to be raised in miserable circumstances by his mother's sister, Petunia, her horrid husband Vernon and their spoiled son Dudley."

While Rowling won't be penning the play, she will be producing and fully endorsing it.
