‘Guardians of The Galaxy 2’ Release Date, News: Director James Gunn Talks Upcoming Sequel

After the box office success of 'Guardians of the Galaxy', the next question that comes to mind is where the story is headed, and writer/director James Gunn knows exactly what, and what should not come about in the sequel, which is being touted for a release date in 2017.

Having already announced some of the supporting characters who will be reprising their roles in the next installment of the film, Gunn said that that there will be some major changes in the sequel.

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, the director said that it was all about "walking forward in an elegant manner."

"When you go forward with a group of characters, which means you have to go forward. And going forward means you're understanding these characters in a new way, you're developing a new kind of story about their lives and who they are and where they're going."

Gunn added that if the goal in a sequel is to move forward that it should not be a repeat of its predecessor, because "that would be going backwards."

The writer/director even mentioned the James Bond series as a point of comparison to where the 'Guardians' is heading. According to Gunn, despite being a fun series, "it is a Bond movie through and through" and the character of Bond never learns anything.

Gunn said that was not what he envisioned for the 'Guardians', adding that the characters will undergo continuous change.

"I think that some of the characters are probably worse than what we think they are, and other characters are better than what we think they are," he said.

Gunn added that it would be "interesting" to learn more about the different facets of the characters as time goes on.

As it stands, 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
