‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ Release Date, Cast News: Nova Will Not Be Making An Appearance

Director James Gunn of 'Guardians of the Galaxy' put rumors to rest and confirmed that Nova of the Nova Corps will not be appearing in the movie's upcoming sequel.

Since the release of the first Guardians movie, Marvel fans have been trying to figure out the other superheroes or otherworldly characters who might be appearing in the film's sequel. One such character that has been rumored to make an appearance is Nova, a.k.a. Richard Rider, who came from Earth and became the leader of the Nova Corps after being selected by Rhomann Dey before his death.

This rumor was punctuated with a scene in the film where a shell that was rumored to contain Nova was seen at the Collector's ruined lab and ended up split open after the lab exploded, according to Cinema Blend.

There was also the fact that Nova was featured in the versions of the screenplay that have appeared even before the first movie was released, as well as the rumors that Nathan Fillion was being pegged to play the character.

However, Gunn was quick to axe the rumors, when he denied Nova's upcoming appearance in a post on his official Facebook page.

In the original post, Gunn explained his belief that studios needed to build a strong base for their films. He believed that studios these days were "trying to grow trees without a strong seed" and urged them to be more experimental in making great films, not just great franchises.

Several fans and interested parties commented on Gunn's post, and it was in the midst of discussions when the director explained that Nova will not be appearing in favor of focusing on Peter Quill a.k.a. Star Lord.

"I think Quill being the only earthling is important," Gunn wrote, "That serves the entire movie going audience and not just the handful of Nova fans."

However, Gunn did try and placate the fans. He amended that Nova's appearance will not fit the sequel "at this moment," but that did not completely deny any future appearances.

'Guardians of the Galaxy' stars Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, John C. Reilly, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker and more. Its sequel 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' is slated for a theatrical release on May 5, 2017.
