Washington Redskins Roster News: Jay Gruden Confirms Cousins as Redskins’ Starting QB

It's been controversial at the Washington Redskins quarterback front, but coach Jay Gruden has made his decision, confirming that the team would be going with Kirk Cousins as their starting quarterback for Week 1, CBSSports.com reports.

"I just think it's not so much what somebody didn't do, it's just what Kirk has done," Gruden said. "And I think what he's done in practice and OTAs has really opened our eyes. And he's proven to be the best quarterback on our roster at the time. It's a compliment to Kirk."

Adding, "I think Kirk has played so well, he's earned the right."

Gruden also discussed the situation with his injured quarterback Robert Griffin III, saying there has been "no discussions" about letting the controversial quarterback go contrary to recent reports that have suggested members of the team have been looking to unload the fourth-year player.

"I like Robert. His future is with the Washington Redskins," Gruden said. "There's been no discussions about letting him go. Last year, we used all three [quarterbacks]. We didn't want to but we had to. I anticipate Kirk taking this job and running with it. The door is not shut on Robert Griffin. He's a Washington Redskins player and he's got to come in and compete like everyone else."

Griffin is owed $16 million in injury-guaranteed money for 2016, as noted by the report.

"I can't say enough about the class act Robert has been from the day I was drafted to now and the way he's treated me," Cousins said. "The way he's handled a lot of adversity. I have marveled about his ability as a rookie to never flinch and to compete. And the way he's a fierce competitor, I've always respected. He's continued to operate that way no matter what's been thrown at him."
