Things could be smooth sailing for the characters in "Grey's Anatomy" season 12, but not for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo).

According to a promo trailer, Meridith is set to be seen lying on the floor in her scrubs and it seems that she had been either shot or stabbed. The doer of the act remains a mystery. A sequence from the clip followed Meredith as she was brought to the operating room, which indicates that she had gotten a serious injury that needs surgical management.

What happened to Meredith was enlightened by "Grey's Anatomy" star Kelly McCreary, who plays Dr. Maggie Pierce, Meredith's half-sister. In her interview with Entertainment Weekly, McCreary said that Meredith got attacked by someone fans would have least expected and it was just as terrifying, shocking, and harrowing as it appeared.

In the same interview, Sarah Drew, who plays Dr. April Kepner, said that Meredith was attacked really brutally, really viciously, and in a completely surprising, weird way, adding that everyone else was really on the "sidelines" in the Meredith-centric episode.

With what had happened, it is assumed that Meredith's case would be known in the who hospital and would place an adversely impact Amelia (Caterina Scorsone). In the same interview, Scorsone said that Amelia took the incident really hard, adding that the character always held herself extremely responsible for the misfortune of others.

Scorsone also mentioned that the case would made Ameelia feel somehow responsible, even though she was really not. The actress added that the character often took it all very personally when someone she was close was hurt.

For Scorsone, Amelia would be at a "very, very low point," when the series returns.

In her separate interview with TV Line, McCreary also added that things were bad in a "whole different way," as bad as things had gotten for Meredith.

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 is set to return on Feb. 11 on ABC.
