'Grand Theft Auto' TV News: BBC Filming ‘GTA’ Television Documentary Drama Series
BBC announced on Thursday that is currently working on a new television drama based on Rockstar Games' hit video game series 'Grand Theft Auto.' Being filmed for British viewers only, the upcoming show will be a part of BBC's 'Make it Digital' campaign.
According to IB Times, the television drama will be developed jointly by Guy Cocker, a gaming and technology journalist who has confirmed the show through his Twitter handle. According to Cocker, the upcoming series will not be a live-action adaptation of Rockstar Games' gritty game series. Instead, it will be more like a documentary regarding the making of the popular video game franchise.
A statement issued by the network on Thursday read, "Unlike many coding success stories, 'Grand Theft Auto' was not created in Silicon Valley - it was the brainchild of a bunch of British gaming geniuses who had known each other since their school days." The BBC statement further said, "In autumn 2013 its latest iteration - 'GTA 5' - earned $1 billion in its first three days, becoming the fastest-selling entertainment product in history."
The television documentary drama on "Grand Theft Auto' will run for 90 minutes and will deal with the moral indignation the game sparked when it was first released on PlayStation and PC in October 1997.
While BBC has yet to make an official announcement regarding the air date of the upcoming documentary series; for now, the network has also not confirmed if the show would later be aired for the audience in the U.S.
In addition to the 'Grand Theft Auto' series, the 'Make it Digital' series will also include feature shows like a 'Girls Can Code,' 'Doctor Who' special, and 'Absolute Genius,' a series that explores the manner in which game development and advancing technology are fashioned.
