The trailer for season 2 of Fox's Gotham promised more thrills than ever before with Gotham's most infamous villains the Joker and the Penguin wreaking havoc on the beleaguered city.

The finale of Season 1 of the TV series based on the beloved DC Comics comic saw the tail end of vicious gangster boss Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) and crime boss Falcone (John Doman).

Detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and GCPD Captain Essen (Zabryna Guevara) will not be able to enjoy their "new day," however, viewers can catch a glimpse of the onslaught of Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor).

In season 2, viewers will also see the rise of Batman's ultimate nemesis, the fearsome Joker. The Joker (Cameron Monaghan) will cause his own special brand of chaos and it will be up to Batman to clean it up.

The Joker's arrival was teased by Heller to The Hollywood Reporter soon after season 1 wrapped:

"We're going to find out how the hell Jerome, the proto-Joker we met earlier in the season, connects with the Joker as people know him. That's the big focus of the beginning of the second season. We're going to tell the story of how the Joker came to be."

Heller also revealed at Comic-Con that the city of Gotham will sink under the mischief of other evil villains including the Riddler (Cory Michael Smith), hitman Victor Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan), Theo Galavan (James Frain), his sister Tabitha aka Tigress (Jessica Lucas), Clayface and Mad Hatter.

Heller says, "[season 2 will be] the rise of the villains [as Gotham] starts to decline into chaos."

Gotham will return to the air on the 21^st September on Fox.
