Google Maps News: Navigation, Offline Feature Just Got Expanded; Users Can Now Save Map Of Destination

A new change in Google Maps would be welcome news for tourists who may find it hard to access data in their local destination.

A report from CNET revealed that three more additions to the search giant's navigational service were unveiled recently.

Users can save a map of their destination either in their device's internal storage or the external storage via the SD card. This is a lifesaver for people whose mobile devices only carry very small internal storage. That should give you enough space to download apps and music that could get you through your vacation.

For users of Android who can't get network coverage, or think that data charges are too expensive, they can just tell Google Maps to make use of Wi-Fi.

"Now, when you know you'll have spotty service or just want to save on data, you can toggle to 'Wi-fi only' to use Google Maps entirely offline on Android," said the Google blog. "And the best part is that you can still use other apps and the rest of your phone as you normally would."

In related news, when Google Maps was integrated with Uber, it was criticized for excluding other ride services. Now, the search giant announced that Android users can now choose from any of the ride services such as the GO-JEK in Indonesia, and also the Grab app in Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

In Europe, the Google Maps integration with Gett, Hailo and My Taxi was also launched, albeit limited to cities in Poland, Italy, Ireland and Austria. The service is also expanded in Israel and Russia, the news reports said.
