Google Glass Latest News: Tech Titan to Overhaul Device, Successor in Development

If latest reports are to be believed, Google will soon come out with an overhauled and further improved Google Glass.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Google's new collaborator in the Google Glass project, Luxottica, is currently working on a new product for the eyewear connected to the Web. Addressing the stakeholders at the company's general meeting in Milan, Italy, Luxottica chief executive Massimo VIan said that the device will be coming out soon. He, however, he did not mention a precise date or time frame for the release of the device.

According to Vian, "In Google, there are some second thoughts on how to interpret version 3 [of the eyewear]." Luxottica CEO added, "What you saw was version 1. We're now working on version 2, which is in preparation."

It is worth mentioning here that, to a great extent, Luxottica has been credited with the success of eyewear brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley. Now, the company has been tapped by the biggest Internet research company to provide it with frames for their next batch of Google Glass.

Concentrating on the new version, Google will make the Glass more user-friendly and familiar by pairing it with more comfortable eyewear. Aside from that, the upcoming Glass will also come much cheaper than the original, have longer battery life, and much improved display and audio.

It appears that Google is currently focusing on developing the eyewear again from scratch, as the Mountain View-headquartered tech giant recently stopped selling the original Glass version. Moreover, the company has also stopped its Explorer program midway. Subsequently, the company placed the Glass project from Google X's research labs into the hands of Tony Fadell, who is the head of Google's Nest program.

It may be recalled that Google launched the Glass some time in mid-2014, but poor sales of the device may have prompted the company to revamp the program. In fact, the device is said to be plagued by several issues, most important among them being security and privacy concerns, as people have noticed that the Google Glass permitted wearers to capture images and record videos noticeably.
