Google 2015 News: Tech Titan Likely to Showcase Project Ara Smartphones at MWC in Barcelona [VIDEO]

Even as tech giants like Samsung and HTC are gearing up to showcase their latest handsets at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 in Barcelona, the Mountain View- based tech titan Google is working to introduce the modular phones of the company's Project Ara, which is expected to change the mobile computing industry, at the same event.

According to a recent report in Christian Today, as many as 50 modular components are likely to be present at the Mobile World Congress this time. While all of them may not be functional, separate functional handsets will be showcased with a view to display their functioning vis-à-vis the surrounding audience, the report says.

There are reports that the Japanese tech manufacturer Toshiba will be collaborating with Einfochips, a semiconductor manufacturing company based in India's Gujarat, to make chips to power the modular smartphones.

The report quotes Shardul Kazi, Toshiba Senior Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer, as saying, "Chips for Google's revolutionary modular smartphones in project 'Ara' is provided by Tech giant Toshiba and its partner Gujarat-based Einfochips. Google is designing modular smartphones in which different modules can be assembled as one smartphone. Toshiba will make chips which can be used in modules and in the base plate, and will give idea on what kind of modules can be developed."

Kazi further said, "On Ara, consumers can design their own Smartphone according to their demands or they can upgrade with new features which they want to set in modular phone."

Einfochips CTO further said that the Project Ara smartphone will come in two different versions. While one version will be christened the Spiral One, the other will be called the Spiral Two. Currently, the Spiral Three is in the midst of being released. Kazi also said that consumer will be able to purchase the Spiral Two as well as the Spiral Three, but did not reveal the starting price of these modular smartphones.

Nevertheless, it is already known that the price of these modules will vary from $50 to $500, with the increase in the price of that specific component; overall performance of the component will also improve further. Earlier reports, published in 2014, said that Project Ara smartphones will be available at a starting price of $50.
