Golden State Warriors NBA 2015 News: Speights ‘Likely to Play’ in Finals Series
The Golden State Warriors got good news recently when it was announced that Klay Thompson was cleared to play in Game 1 of the NBA Finals after successfully completing the NBA's concussion protocol. They got added good news when Warriors coach Steve Kerr that forward Marreese Speights, who has not played since May 9 due to an injured calf will also be available for the series.
"Mo's had two good practices in a row and he will more than likely play in this series. It's just a question of how the rotations unfold, the matchups. Festus (Ezeli) has played well and David (Lee) has had some good moments, particularly against Memphis. Every series is a little different, the matchups are different, so you have to mix and match and find the combinations that work," Kerr said.
Speights was a key part of the Warriors vaunted bench crew averaging 10.4 points and 4.3 rebounds in just 15.9 minutes per game during the regular season. In seven postseason games this year, he hasn't quite put up the same numbers averaging just four points and 2.3 rebounds, while playing just barely over seven minutes per game.
The Warriors, though, will likely need all the big bodies they can throw at LeBron James, who has worked more and more in the post in these playoffs. They will also need to put bodies on Tristan Thompson, who has been putting on an offensive rebounding clinic this postseason.
On the other side, the Cleveland Cavaliers' All-Star guard Kyrie Irving still remains questionable for the series opener. Irving has been kept out of portions of the team's pratices as he continues to recover from tendinitis in his left knee.
Cavaliers coach David Blatt has said that Irving's progress has been slow, while the explosive guard has called his situation a "day-to-day thing."
The Warriors take on the Cavs for Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday, June 4.
