Golden State Warriors NBA 2015 News, Rumors: Stephen Curry Named 2014-2015 NBA Most Valuable Player
Golden State Warriors' guard Stephen Curry was named the 2014-15 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player after leading the NBA's best regular season team in scoring, assists, and steals. Curry also set the single season record for three-pointers made, and becomes just the second Warriors player to get the honor of winning the award after Wilt Chamberlain won it in 1959-60 when the franchise was still located in Philadelphia, as noted by the NBA's official release.
The 6'3" flamethrower emerged as one of the league's toughest covers this season, shooting 48.7 percent from the field, including 44.3 percent from three, while also making 91.4 percent of his free throws. The 27-year-old made 286 three-pointers this season, eclipsing his own record he set back in 2012-13 of 272.
While the Warriors became a deep team under the tutelage of first-year head coach Steve Kerr, Curry was the focal point of the team that won 67 games in the regular season. He has the highest plus/minus for any player in the league as the Warriors score 920 more points with him on the floor.
Curry totaled 1,198 points in the voting, which included 100 of a possible 130 first-place votes in an MVP race that was projected to be the tightest one in recent history. The Houston Rockets' James Harden came in second with 936 points, LeBron James came in third with 552 points, Russell Westbrook and his one man assault on the league came fourth, while the league's next superstar, Anthony Davis, rounded out the top five.
Replied Curry when asked if he was still focused on an NBA championship after winning the award, "That's the ultimate goal. This is a minor checkpoint on that mission."
Just like Kevin Durant last year, Curry thanked his family, his teammates, and nearly everyone involved with the Warriors organization in his heartfelt acceptance speech.
The Warriors currently lead the Memphis Grizzlies 1-0 in their second round series. Game 2 is Tuesday at the Oracle Arena.
