Golden Globe Awards 2015 Winners Recap: Five Surprising Winners at Golden Globe Awards

The 72nd Golden Globe Awards held in the Beverly Hills in California on Sunday, January 11, surprised many viewers and critics alike. While some of the prominent names went amiss at the awards ceremony, some unexpected names won the coveted trophies.

Below are five top surprises, according to the IBTimes, for an event that was hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Best TV Series

Many fans and critics had expected that any of the long-running television series like the 'Game of Thrones', 'House of Cards', 'Downton Abbey' and 'The Good Wife' would grab the award for in the Best TV Series category. However, to everyone's surprise, the new series, 'The Affair', bagged the Best TV Series, Drama Award. 'The Affair' stars Joshua Jackson and premiered in October 2014. It has proved to be a major hit in its first year itself.

Best Picture Award

Dashing the hopes of fans who believed that their favorite movie 'Birdman' would win the Golden Globe in the best picture in musical or comedy category, the trophy was bagged by 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'. Nevertheless, 'The Birdman' recovered some lost ground by winning the trophies in the best actor and best screenplay categories.

Best Animated Movie

Many predicted that either 'The Lego Movie' or 'Big Hero 6' would win the Golden Globe this year in the best animated movie category. However, their predictions went wrong when the coveted trophy was won by 'How to Train Your Dragon 2', directed by Dean DeBlois.

Best Actress in Comedy TV Series

Many were surprised when Gina Rodriguez was nominated for the Best Actress award in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy category. Eventually, the 'Jane the Virgin' star defeated top contenders like Lena Dunham ('Girls'), Edie Falco ('Nurse Jackie'), Julia Louis-Dreyfus ('Veep') and Taylor Schilling ('Orange Is the New Black') to win the trophy.

Best Actor in TV Series

It was really shocking to see that 'Fargo', the series aired on FX, defeated the hugely hit HBO series 'True Detective'. In fact, many were surprised when Billy Bob Thornton of 'Fargo' won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television, defeating Matthew McConaughey, who is largely responsible for the resounding success of 'True Detective'.
