'Ghostbusters' Cinematic Universe News, Rumors: Sony Plans More Movies, Channing Tatum Standalone Film?

New reports have emerged claiming that Sony is in the works with a 'Ghostbusters' Cinematic Universe of some sorts. While this means that 'Ghostbusters' fans should expect to catch more franchise movies in the future, they should also expect a new standalone 'Ghostbusters' film featuring actor Channing Tatum that's in the rumor mill.

According to The Guardian, the studio has hired Ivan Reitman, the original 'Ghostbuster's director, as well as the film series' co-creator and star, Dan Aykroyd. The pair will oversee a new unit entitled Ghost Corps, which will bascally be in charge of planning future 'Ghostbusters' installments.

Stepping into the upcoming 'Ghostbusters' movie, Sony has endeavored to compile an all-female Ghostbusters cast. For those that may not know the actresses tapped to play lead roles are Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.

Beyond that, the next once again all-male 'Ghostbusters' film will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the duo in charge of the 2014 box office blowout 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'. On a side note, 'Iron Man 3' veteran, Drew Pearce, has been tapped to write the screenplay.

Moving along into word about a 'Ghostbusters' film starring 'Fox Catcher' actor Channing Tatum, it seems that there's not much information that has been confirmed. The Guardian even goes as far as to say that the actor has not yet signed any contracts for a movie or television series like that.

With regards to franchise films, 'Ghostbusters' veteran actor Dan Aykroyd talked about various 'Ghostbuster' universe films that still have a chance to be made. In an interview with US satellite radio channel SiriusXM, he said, "There's three drafts of the old concept that exists."

He went on to add, "And we're going to be able to salvage some of it and use it. Yeah, we're gonna be able to use it some day. Let's get this one made and that will reinvigorate the franchise. Then we'll go on to maybe doing a more conventional third sequel as we were planning, and another idea I have for it"

Unfortunately, following the death of 'Ghostbusters' actor Harold Ramis, who was part of the original four, director Ivan Reitman at one point stepped away from the franchise. Ramis passed away last year in February, he was 69 years-old.

However, it seems that the 'Ghostbusters' franchise is finally coming together as a new movie is is nearing its release date, as Sony is looking to establish the 'Ghostbusters' Cinematic Universe.

The next film, 'Ghostbusters 3' is slated for a release on July 22, 2016.
