'Ghost In The Shell' News: Movie Receiving Backlash After Casting Scarlet Johansson?
The Hollywood adaptation of Japanese Masamune Shirow's manga series "Ghost in the Shell" has been receiving backlash since its announcement. They first introduced Scarlett Johansson playing the lead role, Major Motoki Kusanagi, but many are giving the benefit of the doubt about it. Moreover, Paramount Pictures are facing more controversy because of the news that they will use CGI to make white actors look like Asians.
A photo of the actress portraying the role of "Major" went viral. Screen Crush reported that although many Asian were chosen to play certain roles on the film, the controversy still circulates on Johansson's portrayal of an Asian character.
Like for example, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Chinese-American actress Ming-Na Wen expressed her disappointment to the latest news. "Nothing against Scarlett Johansson. In fact, I'm a big fan. But everything against this Whitewashing of Asian role," her Twitter post reads.
After the backlash spread like a wildfire, it has been reported that Paramount and Dreamworks are aiming for another, critical solution: the use of CGI to address the looks of the white actress Paramount Pictures were asked about the issue that involves Johansson, to which they replied with a statement:
"A test was done related to a specific scene for a background actor which was ultimately discarded. Absolutely no visual effects tests were conducted on Scarlett's character and we have no future plans to do so."
According to the website, this has been a long Hollywood tradition of "whitewashing" whereas they are trying to cast white for non- American roles. Films such as "Aloha", "Pan", and "Gods of Egypt" have been criticized for casting Emma Stone, Rooney Mara and a lot of Caucasian actors.
"Ghost in the Shell" opens in theaters on March 31, 2017.
