Liverpool 2015 News: Steven Gerrard to Bid Emotional Goodbye to Football Club
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard announced at the start of the year that he would be making a move Stateside to join the L.A. Galaxy of the MLS after close to 17 years with the Premier League team. And now, he is set to play in his final game at Anfield when Liverpool host Crystal Palace Saturday.
"When I made the announcement in January, this was the time I was dreading. The simple reason is because I'm going to miss it so much. But it's here now. I now have to get on with it," Gerrard said.
After 708 appearances donning the Liverpool jersey, and scoring 185 goals in close to two decades, Gerrard believes the timing is right for his move.
"I'm 35 in a couple of weeks. I'm not really sure how much more I could give the club at the level I'd like to give it. Going back to when I peaked from 23 to 30 years of age, the reality is that I'm getting too old for this level and maybe a different level will suit me more," the local Liverpool lad admitted.
Adding, "I think there are going to be some challenges ahead as far as traveling, settling in to a new country and playing in a new league are concerned, but I think it's a nice challenge, and exciting challenge. I'm going to live in a fantastic place and I think the level is right for me where I am now."
It should be a highly emotional game Saturday, a game that would have otherwise just been a run of the mill match late in the season.
"In Barcelona, they have the quote "More than a club.' You look at Steven Gerrard and he is more than football," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said.
