George Clooney News: 'Our Brand is Crisis' Actor Shares Anniversary Plans and Worries About Amal’s Involvement in Maldives Case
Hollywood golden couple George, age 54, and Amal, age 37, Clooney will celebrate their first anniversary on Sept. 27, but it doesn't seem that it will be the glamorous affair that befits their aura.
Clooney actually has a different kind of celebration to attend - commemorating the life of a close friend who recently passed.
At the Toronto International Film Festival, the actor and producer shared with Entertainment Tonight: "Unfortunately, I have to speak at Jerry Weintraub's memorial."
Wientraub, the highly-regarded Hollywood power producer, executive-produced Ocean's Eleven that starred Clooney amongst other big names. He passed earlier in the year of a heart attack.
The irrepressible Clooney jokes, "This is his last producorial way of screwing me over, that on my anniversary I have to go to his memorial."
In Toronto to promote the new film Our Brand Is Crisis in which he stars with Sandra Bullock, Clooney spoke openly about his concerns for his wife Amal, international and human rights attorney, as she flies to the Maldives and Sri Lanka to defend the imprisoned former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed.
On the one hand, Clooney acknowledges "she's a grown woman with her own career."
One the other hand, he admits that, "it's tough when they're stabbing her co-counselor [defense lawyer Mahfooz Saeed] in the head a couple days before she gets there. It's a little nerve-wracking. But she's doing the right thing and she's doing it for the right reasons."
Clooney is referring to Amal's commitment to defend Nasheed, Maldives' first democratically elected president, against charges of terrorism.
He was sentenced to 13 years after a highly-debated trial, and Amal aims to prove the charges false and free him.
