George Clooney and Amal Clooney News: Lawyer Addresses Flaws in Egyptian Court System, Faces Jail Threat
George Clooney's new wife, Amal, has recently run into big trouble with Egyptian authorities. She has been threatened with real jail time for addressing flaws in the Egyptian court system.
Amal Clooney may reside in the United Kingdom, but this human rights lawyer recognizes a bad situation when she sees one. When the lawyer discovered issues in Egypt's judicial system, she began compiling a report that insinuated bad things for the African nation's government.
Clooney's report recommended that officers of the court act independently because the government holds too much power over them. This could lead to bias and unfairness within the legal system. One example of the upsetting bias happened to Amal's client, Mohamed Fahmyone.
Fahmyone was an Al Jezeera journalist accused of aiding an illegal Muslim Brotherhood. The man was sentenced to prison by Judge Mohamed Nagy Shehata, who was known for his brutal rulings. He once sentenced 188 people to death in "one mass trial which didn't distinguish between each defendant's criminal responsibility," Clooney stated.
Even though Fahmyone has been granted a retrial, the journalist and his lawyer cannot rest easy yet. Amal fears that the issues with the first trial may occur again, even with a new judge making the ruling.
"The idea is: well, there were errors and now there's going to be a retrial, but then the retrial operates on the same basis as the original one, that doesn't really mean much," Clooney said. She also mentioned that she may not be able to count on the court for a fair result.
Fortunately, the lawyer believes Fahmyone may have better luck in Canada, as he is originally Canadian, "I see no reason why a transfer can't happen in fairly quick terms," she said.
