'Game of Thrones' Season 5 Spoilers, News: U.S. Senator Quits Watching Show After Controversial Sansa Scene
The controversial Sansa scene from Sunday night's 'Game of Thrones' has seemingly perturbed more fans than it initially let on.
On that note, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill has publicly stated that she is "done with the show" after taking witness to the rape scene. She tweets:
"Ok, I'm done Game of Thrones.Water Garden, stupid. Gratuitous rape scene disgusting and unacceptable. It was a rocky ride that just ended."
For those that may have not seen the episode, Sansa is attacked by her newly wed husband, Ramsay Bolton, who has already been depicted as a sadistic psychopath. It's not as if the rape scene wasn't forthcoming, but it appears fans just weren't ready to see it.
Despite the overall gruesome tone of the show, a lot of viewers claimed to take offense to the scene. Some argue that it sold the Sansa character short and that it would negate everything else she has been through.
McCaskill isn't the only one to voice their displeasure with the episode, as the popular feminist blog Mary Sue made a statement on the show losing their viewership.
While the scene has caused quite an uproar, it isn't expected to particularly hurt the show's overall popularity. The show has been built on its explicitness and despite the controversy, one scene won't dictate how the showrunners plan to map the rest of the series.
"Thrones actually has a long history of making controversial storytelling moves that result in fans declaring they will Never Watch Again, only for the show to then hit record ratings. The death of Ned Stark, The Red Wedding, the Jaime-Cersei Sept scene-all resulted in some fans insisting they were finished, but Thrones viewership rises every season. Currently Thrones is one of the most popular shows in the world, with cumulative U.S. viewership around 19 million viewers per episode when including streaming and repeats," writes EW.
