'Game of Thrones' Season 5 Official Trailer, Release Date: Series Returns April 12 [VIDEO]

This past week 'Game of Thrones' released its IMAX featured episodes and with that the new trailer for the upcoming fifth season.

There's a lot packed in the trailer and it features all the centerpiece characters. The show looks like it will resume right where the previous season left off.

"Set to TV on the Radio's cover of David Bowie's 'Heroes', the trailer checks in with all our favorite, familiar faces. (And a few new ones, too!) We see Sansa still under the thumb of Littlefinger. (Or is it the other way around?) We see the hint of another royal wedding, a scheming Lannister or two, Jon Snow doing his best to lead his men, and Arya striking out on her own. That girl with the whip? She's a Sand Snake. You're going to like her very much," writes Vanity Fair.

The fifth season will be largely based off of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series titled, "A Feast for Crows" and "A Dance with Dragons."

Some alarming news about casting this season may upset some fans. Due to the continuity of the books, some characters may not be featured in this season.

Showrunner David Benioff states:

"Even though we're making changes to the books and adapting as necessary, we're trying to keep the various storylines the same as the books and trying to keep them roughly [chronologically] parallel. And last year, we caught up to the end of Bran's storyline [in George R.R. Martin's most recent A Song of Ice and Fire novel, A Dance with Dragons]. So if we pushed him forward this season, then he's way ahead of where the other characters are."

This means we'll unfortunately have to miss Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead) and helpers Meera Reed (Ellie Kendrick) and Hodor (Kristian Nairn).

In any case fans will also be introduced to a whole new host of characters.

'Game of Thrones' makes its long awaited return on April 12th.
