According to Entertainment Weekly, in the previous episode, titled 'High Sparrow,' fans eventually saw how the HBO series taking a significant turn from George R.R. Martin's novels. Sansa Stark's engagement to Ramsay Bolton is considered to be the most important twist to the show's plot. This was something surprising for the fans.
While Sansa's guardian Littlefinger prepares for her marriage to the demented Ramsay, he is not aware of the fact that the latter skins people alive. He only knows that Ramsay's family is in control of Sansa's once home of Winterfell.
According to 'Game of Thrones' showrunner David Benioff, the twist in the plot was primarily because producers love Sansa and actress Sophie Turner is portraying that character well.
Benioff said, "We really wanted Sansa to play a major part this season," adding, "If we were going to stay absolutely faithful to the book, it was going to be very hard to do that. There was a subplot we loved from the books, but it used a character that's not in the show."
In the novel, Ramsay Bolton marries another person, but that character never shown in 'Game of Thrones,' wherein Sansa's story ends in 'A Feast of Crows.'
According to the new plot, Ramsay's father in Winterfell instructs him to marry, and Sansa was the lucky girl. However, it is a different issue that Sansa pleaded to Littlefinger not to arrange their marriage.
In response, Littlefinger tells Sansa, "You've been a bystander to tragedy. ... Stop running. There's no justice in the world ... avenge them!"
