'Game of Thrones' Season 5 Spoilers, Cast News: Sophie Turner Talks about Sunday's Controversial Scene
Fans of HBO's 'Game of Thrones,' were all appalled by the disturbing scene between Sansa Stark and Ramsey Bolton last Sunday. The scene wasn't near as explicit as the show is commonly known to be, however the sound of the scene was still prevalent, and the violence of the act was also implied.
Quite expectedly, the scene was highly controversial as one of the younger characters on the show was attacked by her recently wed sadistic husband, but contrary to what many may think, Sansa's actress, Sophie Turner, seemed to think differently of the scene.
In an interview with EW, she states:
"Last season [Thrones director] Alex Graves decided to give me hints. He was saying, 'You get a love interest next season.' And I was all, 'I actually get a love interest!' So I get the scripts and I was so excited and I was flicking through and then I was like, 'Aw, are you kidding me!?' I thought the love interest was going to be like Jaime Lannister or somebody who would take care of me. But then I found out it was Ramsay and I'm back at Winterfell. I love the fact she's back home reclaiming what's hers. But at the same time she's being held prisoner in her own home. When I got the scripts, it was bit like, dude, I felt so bad for her. But I also felt excited because it was so sick, and being reunited with Theon too, and seeing how their relationship plays out. Theon's a member of the Stark clan but she thinks he totally betrayed and killed her brothers. It's a messed-up relationship between them."
She goes on to state that she particularly "loved" the scene.
"When I read that scene, I kinda loved it. I love the way Ramsay had Theon watching. It was all so messed up. It's also so daunting for me to do it. I've been making [producer Bryan Cogman] feel so bad for writing that scene: 'I can't believe you're doing this to me!' But I secretly loved it."
Turner addresses the "Sansa-haters" and predicts how they'll begin to feel about the character after this scene.
"Right, then you really have something wrong with you. I swear, this show, after the first season when people were hating on Sansa. Showrunners [David Benioff and Dan Weiss] must have been like, 'Okay, let's do everything we can to make her the most abused, manipulated character!'"
It has been previously revealed that Sansa marrying Ramsey is a departure from the books, however the sex scene isn't, and it is also implied that Theon joined in. Turner comments that she is glad that didn't happen to the character, but she admits it would have been interesting to film.
