'Game of Thrones' News, Rumors: Execs Say Season 7 Brings Series Finale & Ending?
Fans of 'Game of Thrones' have witnessed so many deaths in this fantasy drama television series on HBO that whenever they discuss the show, they usually speculate when their favorite characters would be meeting their ends. But now it looks like HBO as well as the producers of the show are planning to end the popular series based on George R.R. Martin's best-selling book series "A Song of Ice and Fire."
IB Times reports that show creators and executive producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have said that they plan to call it quits after seven seasons - in other words, 'Game of Thrones' Season 7, which is expected to air in 2017 summer, will be the last season of this series.
According to the report, the decision to end the series after Season 7 makes sense, keeping in view the book series on which the show is based. Precisely speaking, George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" will comprise seven books when Martin finishes writing the series. What has actually lent credibility to this speculation is an announcement made in October 2014 stating that the contracts of the show's cast had been renewed through a potential Season 7.
Meanwhile, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Benioff said, "We see the light at the end of the tunnel," adding, "We still have a long way to go and things to figure out, but we definitely know where we're heading and the major end-beats."
However, as expected, everyone does not seem to be happy about that timeline. For instance, HBO would like to see their biggest and most profitable hit continue much beyond seven seasons. Nevertheless, as things stand the network does not have any plans to go against the wishes of Weiss and Benioff.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said, "This is the hard part of what we do." He added, "We started this journey with David and Dan. It's their vision. Would I love the show to go 10 years as both a fan and a network executive? Absolutely."
