'Game of Thrones' News: Joffrey Actor Talks Violence Against Women On Show

HBO's 'Game of Thrones' has been placed under scrutiny more than normally this past season due to the violence it depicts against women.

Fans and feminist groups alike have rallied against the showrunners for writing controversial scenes such as the one where Sansa is raped, however in a recent interview with Daily Beast, actor Jack Gleeson who most will recognize as the least liked character for a period of time.

In this he is asked about the violence the show exhibits against women and what did he think about it while his time on the show.

"Yeah, of course; it's a tricky thing when you are representing misogyny in that way because I wouldn't say the show ever implicitly condones misogyny or any kind of violence towards women," Gleeson said. "But, perhaps, it's still unfair or unjust to represent it even if the gloss on the representation is a negative one."

"Obviously as a 23-year-old man, I can never put myself into the mindset of a woman who has been sexually assaulted, but I think that sometimes you have to represent awful things happening onscreen even if they're for entertainment because you have to expose the brutality of them, because the chances are you're not going to see that anywhere," he continued. "So there's a chance it engages some kind of empathy but it is a gray area. It might be very traumatic and stressful to watch those scenes."

Gleeson's character Joffrey had a heavy hand in the torment of characters such as Sansa, however he never held scenes where he would enact violent acts on her.

The actor claims to not watch the show anymore, but he does give credit to the show for not only objectifying women.

"As I say, I don't watch it so I can't really comment, but I have heard that there is male nudity," he said. "So I think that is one good thing, to not just objectify women but also objectify the beauty of the male genitalia! We're all objects together."
