'Game of Thrones' Cast News: Maisie Williams Addresses Sexism in Hollywood

Sexism in Hollywood has been fairly prominent in the industry from its earliest days, and despite the strides we've made in film and television, female stars have recently been more vocal about its current condition.

'Game of Thrones' actress Maisie Williams, brought her piece in a profile in the London Evening Standard. In this she addressed the various descriptions for female roles versus the male roles.

"There are a lot of roles that come in that are "the girlfriend" or "the hot piece" in a movie or TV series," she explained. "That's something I've seen first-hand and read all the time. It will say "Derek: intelligent, good with kids, funny, really good at this" and then it will say "Sandra: hot in a sort of cute way" -- and that's all you get. That's the way your character is described, so going into an audition you are channeling "hot," which isn't like a person, that's not who a person is. That's what I see and that's what needs to change. I've been lucky enough to play a very great female character from a young age, who is a fantastic role model for girls."

Williams currently plays the role of Arya Stark on HBO's 'Game of Thrones.' Her character, while being introduced to the series as a child, hasn't been sexualized like the various older characters on the show has.

Fellow 'Game of Thrones' actress Natalie Dormer had a slightly different stance on the issue in a previous interview with The Guardian, stating that men are just as sexualized in her industry as women.

"My personal experience has been to work on phenomenal jobs in which the men are objectified as much as the women," said Dormer. "Actors suffer from it, too. Wasn't there a thing about Aidan Turner in Poldark? It's a visual medium, so to a certain extent you get judged on the way you look."
