'Friday The 13th' News: 'The Pretenders Creators' Take On Jason As 'Friday The 13th' Comes to the CW

The CW head Mark Pedowitz confirmed today that the network will be working on a drama series based on the Friday The 13th feature franchise.

Pedowitz told Deadline that the concept of an hour-long dramatic series based on the Friday the 13th franchise's characters and settings started in 2014 when Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films joined up with Crystal Lake Entertainment to produce it.

Sean S. Cunningham, who executive produced the original, was set to do it again together with Randall Emmett and George Furla (EFO) and Mark Canton, as well as others.

Screenwriters Bill Basso of Terminator and Jordu Schell of Avatar were to write the script.

The CW interest in the project was hinted at by Cunningham earlier this year, and the network went on to buy the project off-cycle in a very hush-hush deal.

It is being developed by Steve Mitchell & Craig Van Sickle, the brains behind NBC's 1996 series The Pretender.

There have been many suggestions as to which way to go with the storyline, with one suggestion being having Jason in multiple time periods.

The new series takes on the feel of a crime thriller, more than a horror film. The story details a detectives search for his brother who vanished as a child.

The disappearance is somehow related to Jason Vorhees, a serial killer who's been thought to be dead for many years. He now comes back to terrorize Crystal Lake.

The Friday The 13th franchise started in 1980 and there have been 12 movies, the most recent being Friday The 13th in 2009 directed by Marcus Nispel.
