UFC 2015 News: Former Pound-for-Pound Champion Jon Jones Headed for Plea Deal

Former pound-for-pound and UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones looks to be headed toward a plea deal over charges stemming from an April hit-and-run incident in Albuquerque, N.M., MMA Weekly reports.

According to the report, a spokesperson for the Second District Judicial Court of New Mexico told MMA Weekly on Monday that a Pre-Indictment Plea Hearing has been set before the Honorable Charles W. Brown at the combined request of the prosecution and the defense. The hearing is slated for the Second District Judicial Court on Sept. 29.

MMA Weekly notes that a deal for a pre-indictment plea is commonly struck between the prosecution and the defense to keep the defendant from going before a Grand Jury, where if found guilty, could result in harsher punishment.

Back in April 27, Jones was alleged to have run a red light, then crashed his rented SUV into a car, which then smashed into another car. The pregnant woman who was driving the car the fighter allegedly ran into suffered a fracture arm and wrist. The former best pound-for-pound fighter allegedly fled the scene on foot following the incident without checking to see if anyone was hurt. He was subsequently handed a felony charge of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Bodily Harm or Death.

Should Jones and his attorneys fail to strike a plea deal, Jones could face up to three years in prison if convicted. MMA Weekly notes that there has been no word on what type of plea bargain might be presented on Sept. 29.

Back in May, UFC president Dana White said that should Jones return to the UFC, he would be granted an immediate title shot.

"He hasn't had the time that Anderson Silva's had, but he's the most dominant champion," White said on The Jim Rome Show. "If you look at the murderer's row of the 205-pound division that he went through, and he just went through it like a hot knife through butter, I mean, he's the man. Whenever he gets his stuff together, he can come right back and fight for the title."
