Los Angeles Clippers News: Former Clipper Owner Donald Sterling Files for Divorce

After losing his team, former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling is next set to lose his wife of nearly 60 years, as the Associated Press reports that the 81-year-old has filed for divorce.

According to the report, Sterling cited irreconcilable differences in the paperwork submitted to the Los Angeles Superior Court, attorney Bobby Samini said. The report notes that that paperwork was initially rejected by the court due to being incomplete, but it has since been corrected and resubmitted, listing the couple's date of separation as Aug. 1, 2012.

The AP report also points out that Sterling likewise filed a petition in probate court for an accounting and distribution of assets related to the $2 billion sale of the Clippers to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, while also claiming his rights to half of the community property, as per the court documents.

Sterling's wife, Shelly, had no comment at the time of the report according to her attorney. The report, notes though, that while Shelly Sterling admits to having marital problems, she says that they have never separated despite having drawn up divorce papers herself.

Prior to the filing of the divorce, Sterling and his wife were two weeks away from their 60th anniversary. The AP also reported as an aside that Sterling filed for divorce about four months after a judge ordered Sterling's alleged mistress, V. Stiviano, to turn over the keys to a $1.8 million house that the former Clippers owner bought her, along with the order to pay Shelly Sterling close to $800,000 that Sterling gifted Stiviano in cash and exotic cars.

Over a year ago, Sterling was banned for life by the NBA and fined $2.5 million after a recording of Sterling making racist comments surfaced. As the AP notes, the recording was leaked weeks after Shelly Sterling sued Stiviano for being her husband's mistress.
