Floyd Mayweather Jr. Title News: WBO to Strip Champ of 147-Pound Belt

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is expected to be stripped of his World Boxing Organization welterweight title, while current WBO interim titlist Timothy Bradley is poised to be elevated to full belt holder, as reported by BoxingJunkie.com, after the news was first broken by ESPN.

Mayweather was awarded to WBO 147-pound belt after defeating Manny Pacquiao via unanimous decision during their May 2 bout.

According to Ryan O'Hara of ThaBoxingVoice.com, the undefeated fighter declined to pay the $200,000 sanctioning fee for the title by the July 3 deadline imposed by the WBO. Mayweather also opted not to vacate the WBA and WBC junior middleweight titles, which was required since boxers are not allowed to hold world championships in multiple weight classes, as pointed out by Chris Williams of BoxingNews24.com.

After Mayweather won the belt, he expressed his intentions of vacating the newly awarded title saying, "I'll talk to my team and see what we need to do. Other fighters need a chance. Give other fighters a chance. I'm not greedy. I'm a world champion in two different weight classes. It's time to let other fighters fight for the belt."

But O'Hara writes that the WBO's decision to put an interim title on the line when Bradley and Jessie Vargas fought did not site well with the pound-for-pound champ.

"For Mr. Mayweather to pick up the paper and read that another promotional company has announced that it is staging a bout for the same WBO title that Mr. Mayweather won in the ring, currently holds and has not relinquished, was extremely disappointing for him and his team," the fighter's lawyer, John R. Hornewer said.

Mayweather reported took home between $220 and $230 million for his fight against Pacquiao. He has expressed his desire to fight one last time on Sept. 12, but has yet to name an opponent.
