'FIfty Shades of Grey' Release Date: Film Receives Official 'R' Rating
The final verdict for the rating of the upcoming racy film, 'Fifty Shades of Grey', based on a novel by the same name, has been announced on Wednesday, January 7th. The film that releases on Valentine's Day 2015 has officially been rated R.
The adaptation to the E L James' book is deemed to have "unusual behavior" by the MPAA, amongst many other things.
Variety writes, "The MPAA has deemed "the strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity" worthy of an R rating - although readers of the racy book might wonder how it's possible to depict most of the action without getting closer to an NC-17 rating. Based on E. L. James' risque bestselling romance novel, the film has a built-in fanbase of devotees."
For any fans or readers of the novel, this may not come as a surprise. The film was at best expected to be rated NC-17 or R. If the cinematic adaption is going to mirror anything like the book, there was no other alternative.
Producer Dana Brunetti actually had the idea of releasing two versions, one rated R and another NC-17. "So everybody could go and enjoy the R version, and then if they really wanted to see it again and get a little bit more gritty with it then have that NC-17 version out there as well."
Actor Jamie Dornan who co-stars in the film, reports that he had to study bondage and BDSM which the book is acclaimed to be heavily themed in. On that note, Dornan recently expressed his view on the criticism the film is receiving:
"If people are into that they're into that. By the way, if people make such a hoo-hah about the violence against women aspect of it, it's far more common for men to be the submissive. And it's consensual! There's weirder sh** than that. I think plane spotting is far weirder than S&M. That I really don't get."
As it stands, 'Fifty Shades of Grey' the movie will be released on February 13th 2015.
