'Fifty Shades of Grey' 2 Sequel Release Date News: Filming Pushed Back to 2016, Lead Actors Want Pay Rise
The film based on E.L. James' erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey was a huge hit Valentine's Day weekend, grossing over $550 million at the box office worldwide on a $40 million budget. With its success, stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan want to negotiate their salary for the sequel, Fifty Shades Darker.
The sequel will begin production in 2016 instead of this year due to setbacks in the director's and writer's positions.
On a side note, Johnson and Dornan want a seven-figure raise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the two were paid $250,000 each plus tiered box office bonuses. The negotiations for such a change is not expected for another six months, but the actors want the raises to happen for both Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shaded Freed.
The producer for Fifty Shades, Dana Brunetti, has declined to talk specifics about the salary negotiations, but it is believed that he does not feel they need that big of a raise. He said, "That was the great thing about this film - we knew we were going to be able to make stars. Now it's their opportunity to get paid on other projects. It's been a breakout role for both of them. I'm sure they are getting tons of offers on other things."
The Fifty Shades trilogy is also looking at some setbacks, which could hinder Johnson and Dornan's salary plans. While the film was a huge success its opening weekend, there was a 70% drop-off the following weekend, according to Movie Web.
The sequel is also in need of a new director and screen writer since Sam Taylor-Johnson and Kelly Marcel resigned. Rumors spread that the two were having issues with author E.L. James. However, James is looking to write the script herself.
Fifty Shades Darker is expected to arrive in theaters in 2017.
