'Fifty Shades of Grey' Plot Spoilers: Author E.L James Overrules Director's Ending for the Film
It's now fairly clear that 'Fifty Shades of Grey' author E.L James is not the submissive type in her relationship with director Sam Taylor-Johnson with regards to the upcoming film.
Reports from the set of the movie reveal that given James' creative control of the ultimate finished product the relationship was at times fraught with conflict.
In interviews, Taylor-Johnson admits to their difficult exchanges and is candid in her frustration with James' firm control of how the novel will ultimately be portrayed on-screen. "We would have proper on-set 'barneys,' and I'm not confrontational, but it was about finding a way between the two of us, satisfying her vision of what she'd written as well as my need to visualize this person onscreen, but, you know, we got there," said Taylor-Johnson.
As the movie is set to open this week in theaters, moviegoers will have a chance to weigh in on whose side they are on in the debate over how the movie should end.
At the end of the first novel Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) requests a whipping from Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan.) Once he begins, she comes to certain realizations about their relationship and leaves him.
According to reports from the set, the ending written by James has Anastasia speaking the final word "stop," before title credits.
Conversely, Taylor-Johnson preferred the last word of the movie to be "red," which readers will recognize as the character's "safe word" from the novels.
Ultimately the decision was James' to make as part of the exceptional control given to the writer by Universal after they secured the rights to the material in an auction back March 2012.
Reports state that Universal paid $5 million for the right to produce the project and in that agreement James was given creative power over how the film would end and other creative aspects.
Fans will ultimately have the final word as they flock theaters to view 'Fifty Shades of Grey' opening Valentine's Day weekend.
Early estimates project the film to earn weekend totals of more than $60 million, which will make the case for the hoped for trilogy.
