FIFA Scandal 2015 News: Sepp Blatter Resigns as FIFA President
At a press conference, which took place on Tuesday, FIFA President, Sepp Blatter announced that he will be resigning. In the announcement, he called for the election of a new president, by way of a congress which would be held sometime in the future.
According to FIFA compliance chief, Domenico Scala, it is likely that this will not take place any sooner than four months from now.
"The expectation is that this could take place anytime from December of this year to March of next year," said Scala after Blatter finished speaking on Tuesday.
Blatter will remain in his position as president until the election takes place.
This announcement comes shortly following a report on Monday in The New York Times, which says that the FIFA secretary general, Jerome Valcke, second in command to Blatter, is the same FIFA official whom prosecutors say allegedly wired 10 million dollars into accounts which were controlled by the former CONCACAF president, Jack Warner.
Prosecutors allege that the money was supposed to be paidto South Africa instead, in support of the 2010 World Cup.
Rather, it was paid to Warner as a bribe in exchange for three votes for South Africa's World Cup bid.
The Swiss attorney general, however, stated that Blatter is not being investigated himself.
"Joseph S. Blatter is not under investigation by the OAG. His announced resignation will have no influence on the ongoing criminal proceedings," stated the attorney general of Switzerland.
However, according to Josh Margolin of ABC, Blatter is the subject of an FBI investigation within the United States.
There has been another investigation opened into the bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
