FIFA Corruption News: Football Officials Arrested in Switzerland
As requested by the United States Department of Justice, and the FBI, Swiss authorities carried out a series of early morning raids at a luxury hotel in Zurich.
The raids resulted in the arrests of several prominent FIFA officials. The officials were arrested on federal charges of corruption, and are set to be extradited to the United States.
In a statement released early on Wednesday, police in Zurich said that six soccer functionaries were arrested on warrants from the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York.
The men, who have yet to be identified, were allegedly involved in plans to accept bribes and kickbacks which add up to more than 100 million dollars.
In return, the officials are alleged to have handed out media, marketing and sponsorship rights in connection with FIFA back soccer tournaments in Latin America.
The crimes took place in the United States, using United States banks, but for now it is only alleged.
The charges are the result of a joint investigation done by the FBI and United States tax authorities, which has been going on since no later than 2011.
The FIFA officials who have been apprehended are suspected of soliciting millions of dollars in bribes, committing wire fraud and money laundering.
Although the extradition treaty that Switzerland has with the United States does not include tax crimes, the country will be extraditing the accused men under general criminal law.
According to The New York Times, fourteen people have been charged in United States indictments in the case, and this may include those who were arrested in Zurich on Wednesday.
On that note, up to fifteen officials are under investigation worldwide.
