FIFA Corruption 2015 News: Sepp Blatter Wins Fifth Term Despite Controversy
Despite a massive corruption scandal that saw several of his top executives get arrested, Sepp Blatter was re-elected as president of FIFA for his fifth term Friday. Blatter had been facing demands for his resignation after a US investigation gave the global football governing body its worst crisis in its 111 years of existence.
Blatter beat out Jordanian opponent Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, who conceded after the first round of voting when the reigning FIFA president got 133 votes to his 73.
"I congratulate you if you voted for Prince Ali, he was a good candidate, but I am the president now, the president of everybody," Blatter said in his victory speech.
As pointed out by Reuters, UEFA has been bold in its opposition of another term for Blatter. The European confederation under its president Michel Platini has gone as far as to suggest that Europe boycott the World Cup.
Apart from UEFA's disapproval, Blatter also faces the possibility of an international football civil war as well as unhappy sponsors demanding reform, according to the Reuters report.
"We expect the next FIFA presidency to resolve internal issues, install positive change and adhere strong to the ethical standards and transparency," Anheuser-Busch, top sponsor and maker of Budweiser said in a statement.
Blatter began his reign in 1998, and has been mired in several and varying allegations of corruption, and has been subject to internal probes during his reign. But FIFA has not faced a crisis of this magnitude despite of all the allegations in the past.
"It was a very difficult Congress due to the circumstances of these events. I would say also kind of tragic events, Wednesday and Thursday in Zurich and all with the media in the world, what they said about FIFA," Blatter said.
FIFA, which is more of a global conglomerate than a sports organization, rakes in billions of dollars in revenue from TV marketing rights and sponsorships, and is one of the wealthiest sports governing bodies in the world.
