Federer 2015 News: Tennis Champion Unhappy with French Open Security
On Sunday a young fan was able to make his way onto the showpiece Court Philippe Chatrier to take a selfie with tennis star Roger Federer following his second round win at the French Open against Alejandro Falla. The fan came from the executive courtside boxes and caught the suit and tie clad security guards unaware and got to approach the Swiss star before being muscled off the court. Federer wasn't too pleased with the incident.
"I am not happy about it. It happened in practice too," Federer said referring to an incident Saturday when a group of fans asking for autographs made their way to the practice court. "It's just a kid, but then three more kids came. And today on center court where you would think this is place where nobody can come on, just wanders on and nothing happens."
"Something needs to happen quickly. Normally I only speak on behalf of myself, but in this situation, I think I can speak on behalf of all the players. That's where you do your job. That's where you want to feel safe."
It wasn't the first time a fan was able to approach Federer during competition. Back in the 2009 final, a fan leapt from the stands in Roland Garros to put a hat on the 17-time Grand Slam champion's head.
"To some extent, it's not the end of the world, but it's embarrassing, of course," tournament director Gilbert Ysern said, "It shows that collectively as an organization, we made a mistake and we will have to crrect that and make sure it doesn't happen again."
As noted by an AFP report, tennis has been getting these sorts of incident son the regular. Just this year, during the Australian Open final between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, two people ran onto the court protesting the country's policies on refugees causing the match to be held up for five minutes.
Following the Charlie Hebdo killings, security has been heightened at Roland Garros.
"We are in close contact with the police and we follow their advice, as you can imagine, of course. The level of security has been enhanced," Ysern said.
