'Fear the Walking Dead' News: Showrunner Explains How He Plans to Avoid Copycatting Original Series

With the launch of AMC's new companion series, 'Fear the Walking Dead,' the showrunners will have to deal with criticism as well as endless comparisons to the original show.

While most would find this an annoying occurrence, showrunner Dave Erickson seems to welcome this from his recent interview with EW. This response from the fans will keep him in check, along with making sure he isn't "copycatting" anything from the original.

"I am as willfully ignorant of that," he said. "I think it's a blessing. I don't really see a downside to it. I mean, yes, I think the great part of this is that we are and will continue to receive a lot of attention and then inevitably, you can't not compare the two shows. I think they're different in tone, I think they're different in character and location, obviously, and my hope is that the bulk of the fans who have flocked to The Walking Dead will also appreciate this show as well. I think we'll come out of the gate strong and then hopefully people will recognize that there are differences."

In response to how the show plans to kill off the main characters of the show, if any at all, Erickson explained:

"I would say, look, you're living in the apocalypse, ultimately no one is safe. I'd love to see our core family survive for seasons to come, and who knows. It's a very, very dangerous world and so I can't really say specifically which way we're going to go, but I'd like to see our family survive, the core family survive, but we'll have to see what the apocalypse is going to throw at them."

'Fear the Walking Dead' premiered last Sunday on AMC.
