'Fear the Walking Dead' News: Frank Dillane Explains How His 'Harry Potter' Role Helped Him Prepare For Show
Frank Dillane plans on making his first television debut on 'Fear the Walking Dead' this fall, and while the young actor is no stranger to popular franchises, he'll be faced with some new challenges in this pre-apocalyptic series.
In an interview with EW, Dillane speaks on how familiar he was with 'The Walking Dead' before taking on the role.
"Well, I actually wasn't familiar at all," he said. "I haven't seen it yet at all. I'm trying to stay clear as much as possible. My understanding is it's a very different show and certainly different characters, so I've stayed clear of it. Also, I think it could be detrimental if I start to watch something I'm supposed to be a part of, if I start to imitate at least the style of that kind of show or whatever, so I stay clear."
He also spoke on how he felt about coming into an already massively popular show in a spin-off series and the pressure that follows:
"Well, people forget things very quickly, don't they? So, I imagine that 10 years down the line when people look back on The Walking Dead era, or the companion series, that they'll just seeing The Walking Dead. It's like Star Wars, isn't it? I remember when they started remaking Star Wars, the fury that surrounded that whole thing, and how dare they? But now that's just a common denominator. People are going to keep making stuff. Things are going to be spin-offs. Also, you know, it's still the creator that is involved. I certainly was very concerned about it originally, but I'm trying not to think about it too much."
Many 'Harry Potter' fans may recognize Dillane as the actor that portrayed a young version of Tom Riddle in 'The Half Blood Prince.' This has made the actor quite adept at working in massive franchises and he speaks on how that has helped him prepare for this role.
"I think it has because I was exposed to that kind of hysteria quite early on, so I kind of expect it," he explains. "It's not going to be a surprise at least. I don't really like it, but I kind of expect it at least."
'Fear the Walking Dead' premieres on August 23.
