Basel is looking to defend their home field when they host FC Porto in their upcoming bout at the St. Jakob-Park.
"I was close to signing for FC Porto, it's true. There was that possibility before and after Espanyol. However, in the latter case, I was even closer to return to Benfica," said Basel head Paulo Sousa to reporters in reference to the rumors that claimed he would sign with Porto during his playing days back in 1997.
"The only contact I had with the president of Porto was when I arrived at Juventus. He was in Italy to see how the ticketing worked at the club and in Italian football and then we had the opportunity to talk. He acknowledged the admiration he had for me and said he wanted to see me play at Porto, which made me very happy. But it never happened."
Previously, Basel ended their latest match with FC Sion in a tie by a final score of 1-1 on February 14, where Basel midfielder Shkelzen Gashi scored the lone goal for his squad.
Meanwhile, Porto is trying to continue their winning ways on the road when they go head-to-head with FC Basel on Wednesday afternoon.
"Porto is a team that deserves its qualification for the knockout stages following a group in which they beat Liverpool. This team gave Real Madrid a hard time in Switzerland," said FC Porto skipper Julen Lopetegui to reporters.
"They have experience and also did very well last season. It's a team packed with talent. We have to be at our best in terms of intensity and concentration if to have a chance to qualify."
Previously, Porto defeated Vitória Guimarães by a final score of 1-0 on February 13, where Porto mid fielder Yacine Brahimi scored the only goal of the game in the 31st minute.
