'Fantastic Four' News: Fox Still Committed to Franchise Amidst Box Office Flop

It has become quite apparent that Josh Trank's risky reboot of the 'Fantastic Four' franchise has bombed at the box office in a major way.

The superhero film amassed a mere $26.2 million domestically, and was criticized by fans of the franchise and movie critics alike. Reports have come in to suggest that the movie did even worst overseas, a market where big feature films make most of their revenue.

"That's one of the lowest openings of all time for a big-budget studio superhero movie, and, in a twist Hollywood didn't see coming, the $120 million tentpole lost the weekend crown to holdover Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, starring Tom Cruise. Rogue Nation fell a mere 48 percent in its second weekend to $29.4 million from 3,988 theaters for a domestic total of $109.5 million for partners Paramount and Skydance Productions (M:I continues to be buoyed by strong Imax numbers)," writes THR.

Despite these horrendous results, it has recently been announced by Fox that they won't be abandoning the franchise, which could point to a possible sequel or reboot altogether by the studio.

"While we're disappointed, we remain committed to these characters and we have a lot to look forward to in our Marvel universe," said Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson.

At this point, most critics are opting for Marvel to buy back the rights of these characters so they can represent them well in their cinematic world, something that is anticipated to happen with their Spider-Man character.

An 'X-Men' crossover film was also referenced to happen at some point, but this has since been discouraged due to the 'Fantastic Four' numbers.

No plans have been disclosed about the future of the 'Fantastic Four' franchise at this point.
