'Fantastic Beasts' News: Colin Farrell Tapped For Role In 'Harry Potter' Spin-Off

A very unlikely casting development has arose for the 'Harry Potter' spin-off film 'Fantastic Beasts,' as actor Colin Farrell has been announced to co-star as a wizard.

The 'True Detective' actor is more commonly known to take very dark and gritty roles in action films or cop dramas, however this role will be one of the first times we'll see Farrell outside of his element.

"Farrell will play the role of Graves, a wizard who crosses paths with Newt Scamanger (Redmayne) as he travels through New York City. The film, which is set in the 1920s, starts in New York as famed "Magizoologist" Scamanger heads out across the globe and document the magical creatures of the world," writes Screen Crush.

Farrell will join Eddie Redmayne as the lead, along with Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller, Alison Sudol and more.

'Fantastic Beasts' will be set in 1920's New York but will exist within the same universe as the 'Harry Potter' films. It will even go the lengths of introducing a U.S. school of witchcraft and wizardry.

"Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series but an extension of the wizarding world," J.K. Rowling has stated.

David Yates is set to direct the film with Rowling co-producing.

'Fantastic Beasts' is currently set to be a trilogy series, and will premiere in theaters on November 18, 2016.
