'Fantastic Beasts' New Cast News: Eddie Redmayne Confirmed for Lead Role in 'Harry Potter' Spin Off
The verdict has finally been made public about Eddie Redmayne's casting in the upcoming 'Harry Potter' spin-off film, 'Fantastic Beasts.'
The Oscar-winning actor will indefinitely portray the role as Newt Scamander, a magizoologist in New York City. The film will take place 70 years before the events of the original 'Harry Potter' story.
"Scamander, as Harry Potter buffs will already know, is a "preeminent magizoologist, who in his travels has encountered and documented a myriad of magical creatures," as he's described in the WB press release confirming Redmayne for the film. The character eventually pens the Hogwarts School textbook "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", but Rowling and Yates' upcoming feature film starts out well before that happens. Plot details beyond that, however, remain under-wraps for the time being," writes Screen Rant.
The latest casting rumors have linked actresses Kate Upton and Dakota Fanning up for supporting roles.
This movie will also mark the first film that author J.K. Rowling has hopped onboard to help write. Director David Yates has been picked up to direct and his work on the past four 'Harry Potter' films gives fans a hopeful outlook on its success.
Yates had this to say about the casting of Redmayne:
"Eddie is a fearless actor, brimming with invention, wit and humanity. I couldn't be more excited about the prospect of working with him as we start this new adventure in J.K. Rowling's wonderful world, and I know she feels the same way."
'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' drops into theaters on November 18, 2016.
