Facebook Latest News: Social Networking Giant Working on Dialer App Called 'Phone'

Facebook is reportedly working on a dialer on the social networking media's Android app, which has been named simply "Phone." According to reports, the latest feature will be a type of caller ID, which will display information of the person calling, in addition to blocking blacklisted numbers automatically.

BGR reports that Facebook has described "Phone" as a "new app that shows you info about the caller and automatically blocks calls from commonly blocked numbers." It is interesting to note that the upcoming update is dubbed "Try Phone [FB-ONLY]." This suggests that this feature was originally designed for internal testing Facebook employees. However, apparently, the update has already shown up on some Facebook Android users.

This is most likely the reason why pressing the install button displays a "no page found" error message. While enough information regarding the feature is still not available, apparently it is similar to what Truecaller offers. The Truecaller app is kind of a social phone directory that offers the user information regarding who is calling you, an also blocks numbers that the user has termed as spam. Currently, Truecaller has more than 100 million users, and it claims to retain contact information of nearly 1.5 billion people.

As Facebook already has over 1.39 billion, it is not surprising that the social media giant will want to leverage the information it possesses. Several Facebook users have also saved their phone numbers on their Facebook profiles and, hence, it is presumed that a dialer would utilize this information to let the users know who is calling, even if they have not saved their number on their phone.

As the feature called Facebook Phone was being tested internally by the company's employees until now, it is would be too early to claim that the feature would actually see the light of the day.
