'Empire of the Dead' New Series News: George Romero to Adapt Comic into TV Series

Television will soon have to make room for yet another zombie apocalyptic series, however this one will be written by the coveted godfather of the genre.

George A. Romero, director of the 1968 film 'Night of the Living Dead' will be adapting his Marvel comic, 'Empire of the Dead' for a TV series.

"The series will be written by Romero and longtime partner Peter Grunwald, and executive produced by Romero and Grunwald with Demarest's Sam Englebardt and William D. Johnson," writes Variety.

Demarest made the announcement on Thursday at the Canne's Film Festival. Being so early, the project doesn't yet have a network attached.

Here's the synopsis for the first issue:

"Welcome to New York City years after the undead plague has erupted-but just because Manhattan has been quarantined, don't think that everyone inside is safe! Not only do flesh-eaters roam within Manhattan, but there's another ancient predator about to take a bite out of the Big Apple!"

This suggest that the television adaptation will be a zombie apocalyptic series with the existence of vampires. This will surely separate it from anything we have yet to see from this genre. The fact that the show will be written by the originator of the series is also a huge selling point.

"There's no sign of whether or not he'll get behind the camera, though. And at this point, it doesn't appear that anyone from the Marvel side of things is onboard. Slapping Marvel's name to this project could easily mean the difference between it ending up on Syfy with the goofily enjoyable Z Nation, or on Netflix where Daredevil and other comic properties are settled," writes Cinema Blend.
